Land of a thousand hills
An hour with a mountain gorilla family in the Volcanoes National Park is, for many of our guests, the single most moving experience of their lives. Rwanda pairs it with real safari in Akagera and forest primates in Nyungwe.
Gorilla permits are limited and sell out months ahead, so this is a journey we plan early. We build in two treks where possible, because the second is always the one you remember.
Rwanda combines beautifully with Kenya or Tanzania: forests and volcanoes for the first half, then the open savannah for the second.
Where to go
Mountain gorilla trekking and golden monkeys in bamboo forest.
Chimpanzee tracking and a canopy walk above ancient rainforest.
A restored savannah park with the Big Five and boat safaris on Lake Ihema.
One of Africa’s cleanest, most thoughtful capitals, and a necessary visit to the Genocide Memorial.
Our approach
Three nights is the minimum we recommend anywhere. It takes a day to arrive, a day to settle, and only then does the bush start to show itself. In Rwanda we typically pair two or three camps chosen for contrast, not for ticking regions off a map.
